IIT-B is developing a racing car for FS UK ’22 competition’; see the pictures

IIT Bombay Racing, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay’s student technical team that designs and formulates electric racing cars, has launched its car for the upcoming racing season. The breakthrough comes after a two-year hiatus from Covid-19.

The launch event saw the rollout of the car, which was driven at full speed by a Formula certified student driver, to a cheering crowd on the university campus.

The technical team includes 80 students from 10 different engineering departments and worked on building the electric racing car. The innovative vehicle will compete in the Formula Student (FS) UK 2022, which is a student engineering competition held annually in the UK.

Students, their families, sponsors and professors came for the event to encourage the students and congratulate them for their extra efforts throughout the pandemic to prepare the car with the coordination of the various engineering departments.

One of the students, Subodh Wankhade, said, “In these difficult times of the pandemic, securing the leadership position and setting new records has been a great achievement and a much-needed morale boost for the whole team. This is our flagship event where we showcase the research, development and achievements we have achieved as a team.

Technical team faculty adviser Professor Sandeep Anand said: “I remember when I was a student it was so difficult to make even small model cars, but these students built a car of so amazing electric race which is really commendable. They were the first to build an electric racing car in the country in 2012, which was quite early, major companies have recently started focusing on electric vehicles.

Some of the sponsors who supported these students and their efforts were NRB Bearings, Mahle and Godrej.

Teams of students from around the world design, build, test and race a small-scale formula-style race car. They are judged and rewarded according to different categories. Last year, IIT-B won the 2021 “Formula Student Concept Class Overall”.
