WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – It was a real showdown Friday night at Kansas Dragway. Racers traveled from Wichita and other states for their chance to drag race against a police cruiser.

The Wichita Police Department said the “Beat the Heat” event was for fun, but also had a purpose. WPD’s goal is to fight against illegal street racing.

“We want people to take it to the track and that’s why we’re supporting this event. We give the community an outlet to get out there and do it the right way,” said Paul Cruz, a WPD detective.

New this year, drivers were able to see for themselves how dangerous it is to drive while intoxicated. An officer was showing event attendees what it’s like to drive under the influence using fatal vision glasses.

Without a disability, the tasks are easy. A drink in it, it gets harder. If you switch to the second set of glasses, you feel like you’ve had a few drinks. Finally, the third set of glasses shows you what a 2.0 BAC looks like.

The event was informative and exciting. KSN’s Sam Montero got a chance to take a ride in WPD’s secret weapon: a hot-blooded Mustang.

WPD hopes people can’t wait to “beat the heat” every year and keep drag racing off city streets.

BMW hasn’t had a top sports car since 2000 when it retired the V12 LMR that won the 1999 24 Hours of Le Mans. It’s been 22 long years of racing in Formula 1, GT cars and in DTM, but, finally, BMW is back. This is the car that will lead this charge.

BMW

This is the first look at the BMW M Hybrid V8. It was designed by BMW Group Designworks to bring modern BMW aesthetics to the company’s first purpose-built prototype in decades, which it does through a Hofmeister crease, a unique performance touch on the headlights. circulation emblematic twins of the brand and a particularly aggressive. pair of kidney grids.

BMW says the test livery is designed in part to hide the specifics of some of its designs, but the massive kidneys dominate the look in a way that should carry over to the final car in its final scheme. Although they can be clunky on many road cars, they fit this design in a striking way unlike any sports car racing today.

The brand had previously revealed that the car would be powered by a twin-turbo flat V-8 built on an architecture previously used in the DTM from 2012 to 2018. This is paired with a standard hybrid system to the LMDh ruleset, which The state of the rules will combine for a maximum of 697 horsepower which may be reduced for performance balancing purposes between events.

BMW’s LMDh challenger is being built in partnership with Dallara, whose next-generation LMP2 tank will also be the first building block for Cadillac’s 2023 racer. Both also have the same hybrid unit, but distinct designs, engines and development plans mean most of the similarities will end there. In addition to the Cadillac, LMDh spec cars from Acura and Porsche are also confirmed for the first year of the new IMSA GTP class. If another manufacturer expresses interest, this category will also allow cars built to European Hypercar rules to compete.

BMW has already announced that the M Hybrid V8 will be debuted by Rahal Letterman Lanigan in the 2023 IMSA season. Rahal has long campaigned for BMW’s factory-backed GT cars in both IMSA and the American Le Mans Series that she replaced. He is currently campaigning with an M4 GT3 in the GTD Pro category. No plans have yet been announced for Europe, which means that while the M Hybrid V8 is eligible for overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it is not yet officially scheduled to take part in this race.

Since 1960, Crosslè Car Company has been building racing cars for customers around the world from its factory in Holywood.

Success on the race tracks of Europe and the United States brought growth and commercial success, with hundreds of cars exported in the 1970s and 1980s.

Many famous racing drivers started their careers driving a Crosslè.

From 2020 to 2021, the company delivered “Vaillante by Crosslè”, a project which it says transformed its approach to product development and brought “our best financial results for many years”.

The story began at a trade show in France, where MD Paul McMorran met brand owner Michel Vaillant. Michel Vaillant is a fictional £20million racing hero, drawn at the wheel of a spectacular range of machines.

Crosslè proposed to build a real Vaillante for the first time. An emblematic example of one of Michel’s most famous adventures was selected, and Vaillante de Crosslè was born.

It was no small feat to create a vehicle from a 2D print, but the company managed to land this year’s Excellence in Innovation award.

Paul McMorran, Managing Director of Crosslè Car Company said: “A business like ours depends on innovation. We are in a competitive market from a commercial and racing point of view. This innovative idea was born during confinement and it not only created a new car, it created a new market in France.

“It took us two years and it was a half a million pound project using local talent. It was real teamwork.

“We sold 13 of these cars to adult fans of these books and did it all using local talent in Holywood.”

BMW M’s LMDh racing efforts are moving forward and today’s teaser gives us an unveil date – June 6, 2022. The front shot reveals new design details. For example, we immediately noticed the narrow greenhouse for the driver with the typical air intake sitting on top. Of course, the vertical light stripes stand out in the teaser, as does the massive racing wing. The double-nostril grille also extends across the entire front end, giving the car an extremely aggressive look.

Last year, in an interview with German media, former BMW Motorsport boss Mike Krack confirmed that the new BMW LMDh project would apparently not start at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2023. Instead, the The focus is entirely on North American races such as Daytona. , after all, the American market is much more important for the BMW M than Europe. Krack explains that the new team is not able to fully concentrate on all the races, at least at the beginning.

Two prototypes will be fielded by BMW Team RLL, with the backbone of the racing cars being a chassis developed by its partner Dallara. As the name of the new competition suggests, the hybrid Le Mans Daytona prototypes will feature an electrified powertrain by combining a gasoline engine with an electric motor. The combustion engine will provide a minimum of 470 kilowatts (630 horsepower) while the hybrid configuration provided by Bosch will be capped at 50 kilowatts (67 hp). Combined, the full hybrid system will deliver no more than 500 kW (670 hp).

The battery will be supplied by Williams Advanced Engineering while the transmission will be built by Xtrac for prototypes that will have to weigh at least 1,030 kilograms (2,271 pounds). The LMDh race cars will be an imposing length, stretching up to 5,100 millimeters (201 in) long and a maximum width of 2,000 millimeters (78.7 in), with a fixed wheelbase of 3,150 millimeters (124 inches).

In accordance with the regulations for LMDh prototypes, there will be a cost cap of €1,000,000 excluding engine. BMW will build the first test car in Italy in cooperation with engineers from Dallara, with the aim of hitting the track in 2022 at the Varano circuit in Parma. The new race car will have stiff competition seen how Porsche, Audi, Acura, Cadillac, Ferrari, Toyota and Peugeot will all compete, with Alpine to follow in 2024. Debut is scheduled for or January 2023 at the iconic 24 Hours of Daytona .

Taycan GTS (Porsche Korea)

The Porsche World Roadshow, with various driving programs such as circuit driving, slalom course and launch braking offered by the German automaker, resumed in South Korea on May 19 after skipping a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Porsche Korea had about 28 models, including the Taycan GTS, a model yet to be launched in South Korea, lined up for testing at Everland Speedway in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province.

The Taycan GTS definitely caught the eye of the event, as it’s not only the first Gran Turismo Sport (GTS) version of Porsche’s all-electric car, but also the first time the model has been tested. in the country.

The four-door electric sports sedan has been beautifully styled with a blacked-out chin spoiler and enlarged air curtain ducts below the black-screened headlight deflectors.

On the sides, deep side skirts with gloss black inserts accentuate the car’s body color.

Porsche used its Race-Tex faux suede material on the car’s interior, including the steering wheel and seats to give the driver better grip.

Driven on the circuit, the Taycan GTS showed its full potential as a racing car with a maximum of 598 horsepower unlockable in overboost thanks to two electric motors, one for the front axle and one for the rear.

It can reach 100 kilometers per hour from zero in 3.7 seconds.

Testing the Taycan GTS launch control was breathtaking, as it was almost like setting off on an airplane.

The instructor on the scene explained that a regular car cannot perform the same thing when the launch control is tested several times in a row.

But the Taycan GTS, he added, can ramp up to its maximum power even when continuously tested throughout the day, thanks to its high-end engines.

Equipped with a rear axle steering system, it was easy to turn around on a narrow road with the Taycan GTS.

It was also easy and safe to make sharp turns around the corners of the circuit, as the car could reduce movement of the vehicle body thanks to its adaptive air suspension system.

Pricing and launch date for the Taycan GTS in South Korea are yet to be determined.

The Porsche World Roadshow is open to the public until the end of this month.

After the success of the 340 America and its victory in the Mille Miglia, Ferrari released the 375 MM in 1953 as its most powerful model. These big-displacement racing cars were created to compete with the best Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Cunningham and Jaguar in the World Sportscar Championship. The majority of the cars were racing Spyders, but there were also six or seven Berlinettas built.

The Ferrari 375 MM Spider dominated the World Sportscar Championship between 1954 and 1957, winning 11 races and finishing seven times on the podium (top 3 or 4 places). He also won two national championships in Argentina in 1954 and 1955.

Following an accident in 1957, the car was abandoned. After retirement, someone acquired this legendary racer, removing the Italian V-12 and replacing it with an American-built V-8 engine. This once famous roadster disappeared from automotive history after the installation of the V-8 engine. This American-engined Ferrari reappeared and returned home in 1983. In Italy, Count Zanon di Valsiurata restored the car’s image by reinstalling its Italian power plant and restoring it to acceptable condition.

The Ferrari 375 MM delivers jaw-dropping performance

Aurelio Lampredi’s big Ferrari V12 had already achieved success at the top level of motorsport in 1953. It helped them win a few early F1 races until F2 regulations were implemented in 1953. Ferrari , on the other hand, was able to use the engine on the road. racing cars, starting with the 340 America and then the successful 375 MM. The 375 was named after Vignale Spyder’s overall victory of Giannino Marzotto and Marco Crosara in the 1953 Mille Miglia. Ferrari won the race for the fifth consecutive time, making it the most prestigious at the time.

To create a 340/375 MM hybrid, Ferrari first fitted a detuned version of its competition 375 F1 engine into the 340 America chassis. This engine was modified for customer use with a slightly shorter stroke in late 1953. The Tipo 108’s displacement was 4522cc and was slightly more responsive for twistier events like the Targa Florio and the Mille Miglia. It had all the great features of the GP engine, such as seven main bearings, dual magneto ignition and four-choice Weber carburettors.

Scuderia Guastalla received the first 375 Berlinetta, 0358AM, in September 1953. The car was similar to the Pinin Farina 340/375 MM built specifically for Le Mans. It failed to finish the Carrera Panamericana twice and was later sold to Carlo Bonomi in Argentina. Innocente Baggio’s other 375 Berlinetta, 03:80, was the only one that ran actively. In 1954 he raced it in the Mille Miglia, finishing 19th overall and fourth in class. It ran aground on the Tertre Rouge sandbar during the 24 Hours of Le Mans a month later.

Overall, around six or seven 375 MM coupés were produced out of a total production run of 26 cars. The vast majority of them were intended for road use. Pinin Farina also built two Berlinettas for the Turin Motor Shows of 1953 and 1955.

An iconic sports race car that has drastically fled the scene

Because the majority of recent information about this disappearance The Ferrari 375 MM dates from the 1950s, there are more questions than answers. To begin with, we know that the car was purchased by Dottore Enrico Wax, a well-known car collector. According to The Drive, the latest available information on this car indicates that it resided in Genoa, Italy. Because the car is most likely part of a larger collection, chances are it hasn’t gone missing and is still in its original location.

Fortunately, we know a lot about the Ferrari 375 MM. A naturally aspirated 4.5-liter V12 engine developing 340 hp powers the vehicle. We know that the chassis number of the missing car is 0378AM thanks to Barchetta’s register of this limited series from Ferrari. Moreover, the register shows that this car took part in at least one event in 1953.

Unlike the majority of the other 25 examples, this missing car was not painted red. Instead, according to Barchetta’s registry, this Ferrari had metallic blue exterior paint and a beige interior. Additionally, this particular example is said to have metal bumpers, making it extremely unique.

The Ferrari 375 MM had an amazing powertrain that made it a speedster

The interior is what you would expect from a racing car. You get two tan leather seats, a wood and chrome steering wheel, a base shifter and five gauges. The following gauges are available: speedometer, tachometer, oil pressure, water temperature and fuel. A rear-view mirror is located in the center of the dash, which is unusual for a 1950s racer. A nice feature is that the passenger-side seat appears to have a removable body-color cover. Of course, this is to help reduce aerodynamic drag when there is no co-pilot.

The engine is what really set Pinin Farina’s Ferrari 375 MM Spider apart as a WSC contender. This roadster is powered by a 4,522 cc (4.5 liter) V-12 engine that produces 340 horsepower, 100 horsepower more than the average 1950s WSC racer. Fuel for this engine came from three Weber 40 carburettors mm 1F/4C. Although we don’t know what kind of exhaust system this car has, we can say that it sounds fantastic. You can see for yourself in the video above.

The transmission is a four-speed, which is a little depressing but was fairly common in the 1950s. That all adds up to a 0-100mph time of 11.5 seconds. What’s more impressive is that this Ferrari can reach a top speed of 180 mph with just four gears.

DDeveloping a new racing car is an extremely difficult task. Especially when building on such a successful car as the existing ŠKODA FABIA Rally2, which was based on the third generation of the production FABIA. The new rally car is derived from the fourth generation FABIA and is designed to exceed the high bar set by the previous model.

The test pilots obviously play a very important role in achieving this goal. The drivers – Jan Kopecký, Andreas Mikkelsen, Kris Meeke and Emil Lindholm – and their navigators – worked on the development of the new ŠKODA FABIA Rally2. These experienced drivers are familiar with existing racing cars from Czech car manufacturers, as well as models from other brands. Experience plays a crucial role in the development of a racing car.

“There are drivers who are very quick but can’t tell you much about the car. We need people like that to really push the car to its limits, but it’s the drivers and crews who can provide effective feedback and agree with the engineers who play the biggest role in development,” says Aleš Rada, technical manager of the race car. coordinator.

This wealth of experience and ability to communicate allows drivers and engineers to work together to fine-tune the car and test it in different conditions. “Also, it is important to remember that we are developing the car for a wide range of customers. Our project has more than 450 cars worldwide and the goal is to make their drivers feel good in the new car. Better than in the existing one,” says Rada. “So sometimes we hire drivers who don’t normally work with us on development,” he adds.

Self-driving cars operate in heavy snow

Finnish self-driving technology company Sensible 4 has successfully completed a self-driving pilot project in Tampere, Finland, in the midst of the worst winter in years.

The 2.5-month pilot project, which started in January, involved two self-driving Toyota Proace vehicles driving along a mainline tram line in suburban Tampere. The vehicles were driven in temperatures well below minus 20 degrees Celsius on slippery roads with snowy lane markings and with high piles of snow along the route.

They covered 5,569 km, carried 1,663 passengers and traveled at a maximum speed of 30 km/h.

We are excited to announce that we are working on a racing, car culture and technology community in Miami called Box Box.

With the first-ever Miami GP taking place in Miami this weekend, interest in racing and motoring culture has never been higher. While interest is at its peak, we realize that traditional car and racing clubs can be daunting, not to mention the cost. Box Box is here to solve this problem. Think of us as an inclusive and accessible SoHo House membership club for car and racing enthusiasts.

Entrance to our club will be by NFT and members will be able to strike this summer.

Racing runs in my family, as my dad was a professional race car driver and my brother drove for many years. When I moved to Miami, I created a What’s App group to bring racing fans together to watch Formula 1 races, go to car shows, drive karts, and recently even race our kids.

What started with two members grew slowly the first few years. Now, with the growth in popularity of F1, thanks to shows like Drive to Survive, our group has over 100 members, including many from the Miami tech community. With Formula 1 coming to town and for the next 10 years, we know it’s time to take the community to the next level.

That’s why we’re starting Box Box, a community car club for people who love cars and racing like us. Our vision will provide our members with access to a fleet of unique vintage and modern cars for members to use. Imagine a brilliant meeting space for coworking, organizing events and showcasing all kinds of experiences related to past, present and future mobility. We’ll also be bringing the group out to watch and support the races in our community – just as we already have almost 100 community members and their families going to the F1 race this weekend!

To fund the initiative, we will be launching an NFT membership, which will be the first of its kind for an automobile club in the world – and again, placing Miami at the epicenter of web3 innovation. NFT members will have access to the club and cars and can vote on cool perks like which cars we buy, which services to add and where to grow next.

For more information or to join our friends and family launch list, please visit: boxbox.autos

We are also looking for great community partners in the field of mobility and NFT, so do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to work with us on this project.

We look forward to seeing you at the race!
