MORE than 500 runners will make the pilgrimage to one of Powys’ top sights next week.
Athletes, along with their families and friends, will arrive in Rhayader on Saturday March 5 for the annual Round the Lakes races.
With both starting from Rhayader Rugby Club, the 10km race will start at 11.15am and will be followed by the 30km runners at 11.30am.
Both groups of runners will head into the beautiful Valley of Elan – the 30km runners will tackle the difficult climb of the mountain road while the shorter run will reach the village of Elan where the runners will then turn around and will return to town.

Race organizers were quick to point out that the popular races would not be possible without the dozens of local volunteers needed to make the races safe for the runners – who come from across Wales and the Midlands.
The Round the Lakes event began in the early 1980s and was then a 20-mile challenge – the need to make the race safer and reduce conflicts with traffic forced organizers to design a shorter 18-mile course. miles and also to introduce the 10 km run which replaced the original five miles.
However, nothing has dented the popularity of the event with many athletes returning year after year.
