Police broke up a motorcycle race, “Whistling Morans”, in Athi River for failing to follow government guidelines.
According to a letter dated September 23, the event’s organizers failed to comply with security requirements from the government and international motorsport governing bodies as well as Covid-19 protocols.
“Following your recommendation to cancel the event due to the above concerns and considering that motorsport is a highly regulated space due to the safety requirements imposed by the government and international motorsport governing bodies, a directive is issued to cancel the event until all the prerequisites set by the Ministry and the Federation are met. This will ensure the safety of the participants and maintain the standards required to organize a competitive motorsport event in Kenya “, a said Sports PS Joe Okudo.
“By a copy of this letter, the organizers, sponsors and members of the public associated with this event are informed that following the non-observance by the organizers of the rules and regulations in force and following the notice from MSCF to the government to protect participants and the public from the pitfalls of this unsupervised high risk competitive event, it is hereby canceled.
The violation of this directive will have the foreseen consequences. A compliance report is filed with the Ministry on Monday, September 27, 2021 by the organizers through the sports registrar.
Initially, the organizers took the matter to court and successfully obtained orders for the event to proceed as planned.
The orders also demanded that the OCS Athi River facilitate the success of the event. The orders were issued on Friday, September 24, 2021.
The police, however, ignored orders and tear gas to participants who attended the event.
