What it’s like to ride in WPD’s street racing car

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – It was a real showdown Friday night at Kansas Dragway. Racers traveled from Wichita and other states for their chance to drag race against a police cruiser.

The Wichita Police Department said the “Beat the Heat” event was for fun, but also had a purpose. WPD’s goal is to fight against illegal street racing.

“We want people to take it to the track and that’s why we’re supporting this event. We give the community an outlet to get out there and do it the right way,” said Paul Cruz, a WPD detective.

New this year, drivers were able to see for themselves how dangerous it is to drive while intoxicated. An officer was showing event attendees what it’s like to drive under the influence using fatal vision glasses.

Without a disability, the tasks are easy. A drink in it, it gets harder. If you switch to the second set of glasses, you feel like you’ve had a few drinks. Finally, the third set of glasses shows you what a 2.0 BAC looks like.

The event was informative and exciting. KSN’s Sam Montero got a chance to take a ride in WPD’s secret weapon: a hot-blooded Mustang.

WPD hopes people can’t wait to “beat the heat” every year and keep drag racing off city streets.
